WHY DID CD Projekt try to trademark the word "Cyberpunk"?

CD Projekt have tried to slap a trademark on the word Cyberpunk to protect their upcoming new game Cyberpunk 2077. The move kicked up a bit of a storm since, you know, cyberpunk is a widely used word to describe a sci fi genre and it's not actually theirs, is it? Well they've since explained themselves, do they have a leg to stand on?
