When cartridges really became viable, both militarily and commercially, a lot of "average" people didn't bother to upgrade because of cost, but also because their percussion gun was already sufficient for their needs.
In this video we test an 44 caliber 1860 Colt percussion pistol against a Richard-Mason Type 2 Cartridge conversion and compare the advantages, and even yes, disadvantages of switching to a cartridge gun in the late 1800's.
