“Evolution,” according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is “descent with modification from preexisting species; cumulative inherited change in a population of organisms through time leading to the appearance of new forms; the process by which new species or populations of living things develop from preexisting forms through successive generations.”
So evolution is a process where biological systems change over time. The mechanism by which that occurs is called “natural selection,” which was first described by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace in the 1850s. In the time since the publication of Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species,” much has been discovered about this mechanism, its complexities, and why the initial discovery was incomplete.
Still, five basic elements of the theory of evolution by natural selection are worth considering (the following is a quote from Dr. Stephen Nowicki’s course, “Biology: The Science of Life”):
“There is variation among individuals of a species, and some of this variation is heritable.
In general, more offspring are produced by species than can survive.
Given that there are more offspring than resources can support, there is competition among individuals for resources available to them to grow, survive, and reproduce.
Some variations will be more successful than others in allowing individuals to take advantage of these resources in a particular environment. These more successful individuals will be “naturally selected” to survive longer and leave more offspring that share successful adaptations for that environment.
Over time, natural selection will cause species to evolve adaptations that are particularly well suited for survival and reproduction in a given environment.”
Thanks for your time and I hope you have a great day.
