An American President once nearly got blown up

On February 28, 1844, President John Tyler, along with hundreds of VIPs in American politics, gathered on a ship called the USS Princeton and sailed it down the Potomac River. Tyler sat below deck enjoying the music. Two of his cabinet members, Abel Upshur and Thomas Gilmer, tried to get the President to go up on deck to see a 27,000-pound cannon fire a 228-pound cannonball.

Tyler declined. He was enjoying the music and told him he’d be up after the song was over.

Well, when the song was over, a huge explosion rocked the ship.

Tyler rushed upstairs to see Upshur and Gilmer, as well as six others, dead. The left side of the cannon had failed, spraying hot metal in all directions.

So apparently the only thing preventing Tyler from becoming the second President to die while in office was choosing to listen to music instead of watching a giant gun fire.
