A late September 2022 hunt for ruffs and doodles, or rather ruffed grouse and woodcock. The first outing since my last dog, Sprocket, died earlier in the month. 2021 was Sprocket's last season and his year of retirement came to an end before the torment of not being able to participate in a new season became real to him.
Despite no dog, I was able to flush a few birds and watch them fly away. No shots, but a thoroughly enjoyable early Autumn afternoon in the woods and marshes of central Wisconsin. A pipe along the way to reflect on the day afield.
The pipe: Nording Hunting Pipe 2008, the Woodcock.
The leaf: Erik Nording's Pipe Tobacco (McClelland), Hunter Blend - Labrador. A classic blend of smooth, fragrant black cavendish, mellow burley and sweet Virginia, enhanced with a light caramel-hazelnut note. Rich and satisfying.
