CNN's nailbiting and respectful reporting of the Ukraine-Russia conflict 🙏

CNN and Applebee's have been chastised for their "tone-deaf" scheduling when the network aired a split-screen commercial for the fast-food company while reporting Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The network's live broadcast could be seen displaying air raid sirens screaming in Ukraine's capital Kyiv before the screen shifted into a split-screen to run a commercial for Applebee's in a video taken to Twitter of the aired event on Thursday.

The Applebee's commercial, set to Zac Brown Band's Chicken Fried, included close-up views of wings, a glass of beer, and a man dancing in a pair of jeans, while a banner on the side of the screen read "Russia invades Ukraine" and a banner at the bottom read "Live CNN coverage continues."

The Russo-Ukrainian War is a long-running military conflict that began in February 2014 and is largely fought between Russia and pro-Russian troops on the one side and Ukraine on the other. The conflict began over the status of Crimea and sections of Donbas, both of which are internationally recognised as part of Ukraine. Tensions between Russia and Ukraine rose to new heights during 2021 and 2022, when it became clear that Russia was considering launching a military invasion of Ukraine. The issue worsened in February 2022, when diplomatic discussions with Russia fell down, and exacerbated when Russia sent troops into separatist-controlled areas on February 22nd. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
