It seems to me that the first depictions of reverse grip I saw in the media was in the old B&W Zatoichi shows. My impression is that Ichi, being blind, stayed in touching range of his opponents as much as possible, often grappling or brushing against them en passant. Later on the flights became more flashy and overdone and emphasized his preternatural hearing, but my recollection of the early fights was of Ichi staying inside the reach of those attacking him, negating much of their ability to attack him, like wrestling a boxer. It was many years before I started to see reverse grip show up in movies, minus any factors or conditions that would have made it workable. I have to wonder if these old classics were the beginning of the current fad.
