The Hyundai Pony isn’t held in much regard by the west, but in South Korea it’s celebrated as the beginning of Hyundai’s ascendancy as a global car manufacturer. It may have rusted to nothing in some of the more extreme places it was exported to, but from the outset it was designed to be a hardy car that could survive the roughest roads. And Hyundai didn’t try to do this on their own, it assembled top talent from around the world, and purchased quality machinery from established players. Why did Hyundai think it could take on the world making its own mass-produced car, after just 6 years’ experience assembling other people’s cars? And did they pull it off?
