The M4A1 with the SOPMOD Block II kit upgrade is undoubtedly the symbol for U.S. SOCOM and Special Operations Forces (SOF) during the Global War on Terror era... and yet is greatly mis-understood.
Commonly called, the M4 Block II, this is not a single developed rifle, but rather an entire kit (block) of equipment to increase the lethality of a SOF operator... which one of the most commonly used parts would have been the M4A1 carbine with the Block II upgraded parts and accessories added to it AND with the specialty Mk262 ammunition.
In this episode, we interviewed @Modern Tactical Shooting 's Master Sgt. (ret.) Jeff Gurwitch, a Special Forces veteran who witnessed the SOPMOD Block II's adoption in the early 2013 era all the way through to its retirement.
So what does this Special Operations technology do to increase the lethality of the M4A1 carbine?

About 9-Hole Reviews
Henry and Josh bring you a comprehensive brief of information that helps researchers, consumers, government entities and enthusiasts in their quest for beneficial information, no matter what answers they seek.
Given your comments about optics displacing iron sights, do you see a need for BUIS at all on modern rifles or are you thinking an optic only is all you need?
'It depends' is really the general answer...In a world where you have an acog + a dot + a laser aiming device, it's difficult to imagine a scenario where you'd lose all 3 sighting systems, but irons could still work...but, something Henry loves to remind us about...if you're in another area of the world, it's entirely possible that a rifle you pickup or are issued/given may not even have optics...so skill with irons is still very relevant.
