The weakest E3 week in years has given rise to a lot of contemplative industry observations. Why does the show not work as it does? Is it merely a function of pandemic limitations, or is it emblematic of a need for more significant structural reforms?
If E3 needs to be rethought from the ground up, is the Entertainment Software Association's (ESA) desire to push towards paid influencers and celebrity "activations" the right move, or is independent journalist Geoff Keighley's show approach (GameTrailers, Game Awards, Summer Game Fest) more likely to bring back what was lost.
