This week in What were they thinking…(#214) JFK Jr, diabetes, Tavistock, 4 day week & CO2 economies
VoteCOVID19 has many risks. The most apparent is death. That is just one of many possible issues that can be caused even if you recover from the infection stage.
A consequential effect of long COVID not foreseen is the development of Type 2 diabetes. This is a condition with a poorly understood pathogenesis and no curare. If it is a serious and wide spread issue than it will be a huge increase on the medical demands of every country.
There is 1 silver lining to this situation. Those who have been vaccinated have a much lower relative risk of developing diabetes. It is about 10 percent of those who are not vaccinated. They have about 1.7 fold relative risk.
Not only do we have a means of reducing the risk of diabetes but prospectively RSV in infants. This is properly called Respiratory Syncytial Virus. A very serious illness in children and infants every year.
Pfizer has lodged a ‘fast tracked’ application with the FDA for approval. In theory they will have approval by August and be ready to disseminate the vaccine to expectant mothers.
The good news continues with the first ever cure for Metachromatic leukodystrophy confirmed this week. The 19 month old girl was cured through genetic therapies.
While the blood and bone marrow extraction would likely have been incredibly unpleasant for the young girl it is far better result than dying between the ages of 6 and 8. The only downside is that it is an experimental treatment that costs a small fortune.
Black tea could lower cardiovascular disease risk in the elderly. That is if you take thew results of a small and observational study to be true.
