The explanation given above for this somewhat unsettling ethical decision made by VMPFC patients is just one suggestion.
It could also have to do with other, perhaps more strictly rational/utilitarian, regions of the prefrontal cortex taking over in the absence of VMPFC input (as suggested by neuroscientist Robert Sapolsky in his book “Behave”).
Regardless of the explanation, this pattern tells us that the VMPFC plays a crucial role in how we make moral calculations and ethical decisions.
