Starting with Rosemary’s Baby in 1968, the 70s gave way to some of the best religious horror films around. The Exorcist, Beyond the Door, the Amityville Horror, and of course, the Omen. It was a hot trend, but by the early 80s, it was starting to die down. You still had a couple franchises still trying to thrive in the new post-slasher landscape. It was almost as if audiences of the early 80s weren’t scared of the demons of hell but rather they were afraid of that guy chasing them with a knife.
And it’s almost as if film companies knew that religious horror was fading out. A lot tried to squeeze the last bit of potential earning from major franchises, like tonight’s film The Omen 3: the final conflict.
