Buzz Cut is New Zealand’s first pure slasher film, it has Donna Wilkes and Linnea Quigley in it, and it is loaded with puns. I feel like this movie was made for me! Now the horror-comedy genre is a hard one to pull off. You have certified classics like Shaun of the Dead, Return of the living dead, and the Evil Dead 2. Critics and audiences adore those films and they are universally loved. But for those looking a little bit deeper, there is a ton more fun to be had. Sure, not all of these films will be loved by the mainstream, but I will always adore films like Sleep Away Camp 2, Slumber Party Massacre, and heck even the Gingerbread Man movies can be a real hoot with the right people. These films won’t be winning any Oscars, but many have grown a cult status over the years. At the end of the day, it’s about entertainment. Sometimes we need to turn off our brain and just enjoy the absurdity of it all. 2021’s Buzz Cut fits the latter category perfectly. With enough exposure, Buzz Cut can become a fun cult classic that many can enjoy for decades to come.
Thank you to Martin Renner for letting me see his film!
