रानी पद्मिनी, चित्तौड़ की रानी थी। रानी पद्मिनि के साहस और बलिदान की गौरवगाथा इतिहास में अमर है। सिंहल द्वीप के राजा गंधर्व सेन और रानी चंपावती की बेटी पद्मिनी चित्तौड़ के राजा रतनसिंह के साथ ब्याही गई थी। रानी पद्मिनी बहुत खूबसूरत थी और उनकी खूबसूरती पर एक दिन दिल्ली के सुल्तान अलाउद्दीन खिलजी की बुरी नजर पड़ गई।
अलाउद्दीन किसी भी कीमत पर रानी पद्मिनी को हासिल करना चाहता था, इसलिए उसने चित्तौड़ पर हमला कर दिया। रानी पद्मिनी ने आग में कूदकर जान दे दी, लेकिन अपनी आन-बान पर आँच नहीं आने दी।
ईस्वी सन् १३०३ में चित्तौड़ के लूटने वाला अलाउद्दीन खिलजी था जो राजसी सुंदरी रानी पद्मिनी को पाने के लिए लालयित था। श्रुति यह है कि उसने दर्पण में रानी की प्रतिबिंब देखा था और उसके सम्मोहित करने वाले सौंदर्य को देखकर अभिभूत हो गया था। लेकिन कुलीन रानी ने लज्जा को बचाने के लिए जौहर करना बेहतर समझा।
