Near the end of the American Civil War in 1865, the Union stood poised to celebrate their military victory over the Confederates. During the course of the previous four years, southern leaders debated the possibility of taking a hostage to bring the war to a swift close once military victories began favoring the Union. But one man, an actor, determined that the president had to die in order for the Confederacy to retain some sort of honor. The actor mistakenly believed that President Abraham Lincoln would be more powerful after the surrender and would act like a dictator. This is the true story of the first plot to murder an American president.
