Even though sxhkd was made to be a way to handle keybindings for bspwm there's no reason why you can't use it to handle keybindings for any window manager, whether that be i3, dwm, awesome or any other window manager out there. Previously I was using it with i3 wm with much success. I'm quite a fan of the syntax used for the configuration file for sxhkd since it allows you to do quite a few things that are really useful and simply not possible through the methods used by most window managers.
